What you're actually buying when you buy a replica

A replica reproduces a design whose registration has expired — the shape is public, the craft is not. What separates ours from a cheap import is everything you can't see in a listing photo: kiln-dried hardwood instead of pine offcuts, moulded ply pressed in layers rather than painted to look like it, foam that holds its shape past year two, and welds ground flat rather than filled.

02 — Buying guide

How to buy a replica you won't replace in two years

A five-minute read from the team who unpack these every week.

Start underneath. Turn the chair over. A replica built to last has a hardwood or steel frame with visible joinery — dowels, corner blocks, bolts you could tighten yourself in five years. Stapled particle board is the tell that the price came out of the structure.

Then the shell. Moulded plywood should show tight, even laminations at the edge, not a painted seam. Fibreglass shells feel cold and rigid; plastic ones flex when you press the seat pan. Both are legitimate — they just aren't the same chair.

Buy the size, not the photo. Iconic lounge chairs are bigger than they look online — most need around 900mm of clearance to recline. Every listing on this page carries full dimensions, and the big ones are on the floor in Avondale.

Common questions

How close is a replica to the original?+

The proportions and silhouette are faithful; the materials are our own specification. Full dimensions and a materials list are on every product page so you can compare before you buy.

What warranty do I get?+

All products come with a 12-month warranty covering manufacturing defects. Natural wear and tear, improper use, incorrect assembly or insufficient care aren't covered. Full details are in our Warranty & Returns policy.

Can I return it if I change my mind?+

Yes — we offer a 7-day change of mind return from the day you receive your order. The item must be unused and in "as-new", resellable condition, unassembled, and returned complete in its original packaging with all parts and hardware. Contact customercare@urbansales.co.nz to get your return authorised first. Returns outside those conditions may attract a restocking fee.

Can I see these in person?+

Much of the collection is on the floor at our Avondale showroom, open 7 days, 9:45am – 5:15pm. The larger lounge pieces are always set up.

How long is delivery?+

NZ-wide delivery is available on every replica, or collect from our Avondale showroom. Pre-order and backorder items show their ETA on the product page.

Do you sell replica dining sets and lounges too?+

Yes — the replica furniture range covers dining chairs, lounge chairs, daybeds and occasional seating. Everything currently in stock is in the grid above.
